Millions of people suffer from arthritis, which can affect nearly any part of the body. When arthritis
occurs in the back however, it can be especially debilitating since the back is necessary for everything from
walking to sitting. Arthritis is the deterioration of the cartilage between bones, causing pain, inflammation
and painful regrowth of bone in the body's attempt to heal itself. Arthritis back pain relief
is as unique as how arthritis itself manifests in each person however there are several methods that appear to
be effective in treating this kind of pain.
Heat therapy
Many people swear by the use of heat therapy for this condition, including warm baths to heating pads at the
site of the inflammation. If possible, heat therapy is most effective when used in conjunction with
anti-inflammatory over the counter medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. Physical therapy, followed
by heat therapy also appears to be effective in controlling arthritis back pain. Heat therapy can be especially
helpful when stiffness occurs in the early morning of after physical activity.
Physical activity
While physical activity probably isn't at the top of your list of things to do when you have back pain,
under your physician or physical therapist's guidance, it can be very effective. Physical activity performed in
a pool is especially good for arthritis back pain relief, due to the lack of strain on the back from
weight-bearing. The warmth of a pool is also good to loosen up tight muscles and ligaments.
Massage therapy
Massage is a wonderful therapy that can help with many physical problems and it has been found to be
particularly effective for people with this kind of pain. Massage doesn't just relax your muscles, it also
helps your body release pain relieving hormones such as dopamine. All massage therapies are not for every kind
of arthritis pain, so always consult with your physician to find the kind of massage therapy that's right for
you.
Over the counter anti inflammatory drugs
Finally, many people with arthritis back pain take anti inflammatory over the counter medications such as
ibuprofen and naproxen sodium to help relieve pain. These medications are often combined with the above
described therapies to facilitate healing and decrease pain while strengthening muscles.
